Girl Born in Prison Overcomes All Odds and Earns Admission to Harvard

Despite facing incredible challenges and expectations, a young girl who was born in prison has defied all odds and secured a place at the prestigious Harvard University. Meet Sky Castner, an 18-year-old whose incredible journey will inspire you.

A Remarkable Beginning

Sky Castner’s story began in the Galveston County Jail, where she entered the world against all odds. From the very beginning, Sky’s life took an unconventional path. Her mother, who was incarcerated at the time of her birth, played no significant role in her upbringing.

Her father, however, made the brave decision to raise Sky as a single parent. He picked her up from the prison and embarked on a new chapter with Sky by his side. Despite the challenging circumstances, he provided her with love, support, and guidance throughout her upbringing.

Determination in the Face of Adversity

Sky’s early years were marked by frequent relocations, but her unwavering determination to attend Harvard never wavered. She cultivated her ambitions and worked hard to achieve her goals. Last week, Sky’s hard work paid off when she secured third place in her class at Conroe High School, cementing her acceptance into the world-renowned Harvard University to study law.

Interestingly, Sky’s application letter to Harvard began with a powerful statement: “I was born in prison.” This courageous declaration encapsulates her resilience and determination to overcome her past and build a brighter future.

Nurturing Potential through Mentorship

Sky’s intellectual prowess was evident from an early age. Even as a young child, she excelled academically and displayed a voracious appetite for reading. Recognizing her potential, the faculty at Reaves Elementary School believed that additional mentorship would allow Sky to truly thrive.

Enter Mona Hamby, who joined CISD’s Project Mentor to provide guidance. Upon meeting Sky, Mona was struck by her intelligence, determination, and love for reading. Their bond grew stronger as they discovered their shared experiences of not knowing their mothers.

Mona’s guidance went beyond academics. She advised Sky on choosing her first pair of glasses, getting her hair styled at a salon, and finding joy in her free time. Through their relationship, Sky discovered new opportunities and perspectives, shaping her into the remarkable individual she is today.

A Transformative Journey to Harvard

Sky’s desire to attend Harvard grew even stronger after visiting the campus with Mona and her husband in 2022. Seeking advice for her application, she turned to Professor James Wallace at Boston University.

With Professor Wallace’s guidance, she mastered the art of telling her story authentically and compellingly. Sharing her unique journey, challenges, and triumphs, Sky crafted an application that stood out from the rest.

A Triumph of Tenacity

Sky Castner’s journey from being born in a prison to securing a place at Harvard is a testament to her indomitable spirit and relentless perseverance. She defied all odds and emerged victorious, paving the way for others to believe in their own dreams.

We cannot help but applaud Sky for her incredible achievements. Her story serves as a reminder that with determination and unwavering support, one can overcome the most formidable challenges.
